Edvard Kristensen Nesset & his wife Johanne Olsdtr. Storhaugen were my great grandparents and the parents of my mother's mother. Johanne Nesset's parents, Ole Johannesen and Mari Johannesdatter Storhaugen, left Norway with several of their children in 1883 and settled on a farm in Irving township (near Black River Falls), Jackson County, Wisconsin. Ole was already 60 years old Johanne and Edvard Nesset remained in Norway for awhile longer. Edvard emigrated in 1906; two of his daughters had emigrated a few years earlier. His son John emigrated about 1907. Johanne and the 6 younger children followed in 1910. They all settled in Black River Falls. Johanne and Edvard's two oldest sons remained in Norway. Three other children died in infancy. That is a total of 15 kids! The two Nesset sons who emigrated to the U.S. did not have children. Thus only the sons who remained in Norway left sons with the name Nesset. The name Nesset comes from Rørvignesset Farm, near Faavang and Ringebu, Oppland. It is not Edvard Kristensen's 'old family farm'. He seems to have lived there for only a few years as a tenant farmer. But it was at the time when Norwegians were being encouraged to replace their traditional patronymic naming system with 'permanent' surnames - that is, surnames that were passed from generation to generation and were not derived from the father's first name. Thus Edvard 'Son of Kristen' became Edvard Nesset. |
